Spouting Horn is a natural blowhole carved through lava rock. At the right time, you hear a great sucking sound and water will spew high into the air just in front of the handy observation platform the installed. This is a must visit and can done in combination with the botanical gardens which are just across the street.
Makauwahi Cave & Tortoise farm (they don't eat em) show what thousands of hours of hard work and volunteer hours can do. See an ancient cave that was once totally overgrown by trees and visit a tortoise farm surrounded by restored wet lands that bring to life ancient Hawaiian cultivation practices.
The Allerton & McBryde Botanical Gardens are incredible. They're so massive you may not be able to see it on one trip. Take it one garden on a time for sure! The Mcbryde portion is rugged with all sorts of native plants and trees scattered throughout its walking paths. Allerton Garden is set up near a mansion and is manicured. The famous Jurassic Park trees are located here. Pick this one if you like the blend of man and nature.
The old sugar plantation town still has a few relics from the past left over. That and the charming storefronts make this place a nice stop on your way to pretty much anymore. There is a small exhibit just across the street from the giant chimney that is worth a look
